Braille Carved into Soap

braille carved soap.jpg

These poetic castile soap carvings were created by Arianna Vanini as part of an installation called, "tactile."

Each element represents a letter of the Braille alphabet. The letters compose the sentence, "the essential is invisible to the eyes," a quote from "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupry...Because of the nature of the material, this work is intended to disappear.

June Bazaar: Tools for Organizing

By Susan Beal

gray inspiration board organizing bazaar.jpg

Magnetic Inspiration Board

These sleek, stylish magnetic fabric boards by are paired with covered-button magnets in the same prints - an easy, beautiful way to make an ever-changing inspiration board, or keep your important papers or project receipts handy in your craft room, kitchen or bedroom. MooreMagnets makes these in sizes from 10" x 10" to 24" x 24" and they mount right onto a wall. I really love the stems and leaves pattern and the Amy Butler Optic Blossom fabric versions - the unframed squares are so beautifully simple.

Expedit Shelves

There are so many ways to use this versatile open shelving from Ikea in a craft room for organizing and storage - I like to cover simple cardboard boxes with scanned fabric to hold my color-coded scraps, while Rachel mentioned earlier this month that she hoped to make a cutting table that doubles as fabric storage for her new studio space with this clever project from Jamie at Prudent Baby.

Beautiful Embroidery Samplers

Since we recently moved and undertook a massive home renovation, I haven't had much time to do my favorite craft of all: embroidery. Seeing these beautiful samplers from Craftster user, knohe, makes me really ache to pull out my hoop and floss. Simple rows of embroidery stitches make such a beautiful wall hanging, and are deeply therapeutic to stitch. I love the color choices and simple hoop hanging presentation.

Ceramic Coasters are Maps of Oslo

Each of these coasters by Anders Hansen is a map of a section of Oslo.

This project started with my fascination for city grids, from the strict geometry of New York to the seemingly chaotic Bombay structure. At the time, living abroad and feeling a bit homesick, and I decided to use the map of Oslo, Norway as a starting point.

May Birthday Giveaway: The Wilder Life

[1]

This here website started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I'm thrilled to be able to offer three lucky winners (that's you! and you! and, yes, you!) a copy of The Wilder Life: My Adventures in the Lost World of Little House on the Prairie [2] by Wendy McClure. Wendy's site, Pound [3], was among the very first I started reading way back-in-the-day and I followed along as she investigated her love for Laura Ingalls Wilder. I somehow missed out on the whole Little House experience and I have to say I'm jealous. (Anne of Green Gables? Frodo? Susan and Lucy? All yes. Little House? I'm feeling like I have to catch up to the rest of you.)

If you have an affinity for Little House this book is for you. To win a copy please leave a comment with this entry, and if you'd like something to talk about answer this question: Have you ever worn a bonnet? I'll go first: Yes! But not on purpose. I remember my aunt making me wear an acclaimedly homemade bonnet one the moment I visited Oklahoma. Shortly thereafter we went through a drive-through, which I think was Sonic. I feared they had cameras and could see my polite bonnet wearing shame. I knew the adults were getting away with something because my older and younger cousins were not required to wear bonnets. Luckily the pointing and laughing were kept to a minimum. Ok, embarrassing childhood snapshot time is over. You have until Tuesday, May 10th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [4] applies, good luck! Closed, thanks for entering!

How-To: Steampunk Balancing Robot from Recycled Materials

CRAFT Summer Camp

steampunk-robot-fin1.jpg
steampunk-robot-fin2.jpg

By Scott Bedford

Amaze your kids by transforming two old toilet rolls and a few other recycled bits and bobs into a cool steampunk-inspired robot. Amaze them even further by balancing your robot on the edge of a ruler, table, shelf, or even your finger. And then triple amaze them by rotating the arms and revealing the steel heart in the body of the robot.

This is a fun summer project that's also an excellent way for your kids to improve their understanding of gravity and mechanics. It's also a very flexible project - while I gavemy robot all the bells and whistles (literally, there's a whistle on its head), you can easily customize your robot to suit the materials you have available.

May Birthday Giveaway: CakeSpy Presents Sweet Treats for a Sugar-Filled Life

[1]

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Todays giveaway is coming to you from the future. Well, sort of. Jessie Oleson, whom you might know as CakeSpy [2], has a book coming out later this year (late September is the most informed date I have heard, things change but this might not!) it's called CakeSpy Presents Sweet Treats for a Sugar-Filled Life [3] and she is happy to send a copy to one lucky winner. Just, you know, in September when the book actually exists. CakeSpy, as if you don't already know, is lover of all things sweet, purveyor of the history behind our favorite desserts, a most excellent illustrator with a certain favorite character (Cuppie, pictured here [4]), has a column [5] at Serious Eats, a real brick and mortar shop [6] here in Seattle, and a rabble rouser when it comes to the question of Cake vs. Pie [7].

If you'd like to win a (future) copy of the CakeSpy book just lease a comment with this post, and if you'd like please answer this question: Are you Team Pie or Team Cake? I hereby publicly declare myself Team Cake, pies are great but cake has a power I cannot deny. Ok, you've got until Saturday, May 21st at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [8], as always, applies. Good luck. Closed, thanks for entering!

Organizing Projects And Inspiration Using Pinterest

CZ_OrganizeIt.gif

pinterest_homescreen.jpg

This month we've been talking about organization in all its forms: craft rooms, supplies and even information. Today I'd like to share my thoughts on using Pinterest to organize and bookmark projects and inspiration for your crafting. Our own Diane actually introduced me to Pinterest last fall, and I've had fun steadily building up my boards. First, let's take a look at what exactly Pinterest is:

Pinterest is a Virtual Pinboard.

Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.

Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests

pinterest_my_boards.jpg

You can read more about how to get an invite to Pinterest and how to set up your boards on their About page. You can set up boards for different subjects like craft projects, recipies, color inspiration, fashion, home decor - anything you want to group and pin projects to. They start you off with a few standard boards, but you can modify or discard them and add new ones as needed.

Pinterest is a brilliant bookmark fix for folks who are very visual. I love being able to see, at a glance, dozens of projects, recipes and color inspiration. It's also a fantastic way to bookmark in one consolidated space any visual ideas for a big project or event and then share them with other people so they can easily comment on what you've posted.

pinterest_home_decor.jpg

My first big foray into Pinterest was as a tool for capturing inspiration and links for our big home renovation we did this spring. I'd never embarked on a massive renovation before, and I had no idea how many details and decisions would have to be considered. Being able to visually bookmark things like faucets and light fixtures and then share them with my husband and decorator friend was a huge help. I must have looked at hundreds of bathroom sink faucets. It was borderline insane, but being able to grab images of the ones and have them all in one place so I could visually compare them was fantastic.

I also use Pinterest as a place to bookmark crafty projects or recipes I'd like to try. Some are things I find in my own daily blog reading, and others are ones I repin from the boards of folks I follow on Pinterest.

pinterest_inspiration.jpg

Another great way to use Pinterest is to compile color inspiration for your projects. Sometimes you might stumble across a picture that, regardless of its subject, has some fantastic colors that might work great in a quilt or sewing project. Setting up a board for color inspiration is a great way to get a visual kick in the pants when you're trying to brainstorm your next quilt's color scheme.

Here are some final tips for using Pinterest:
- Read the About page for full instructions on using Pinterest as well as pin etiquette.
- When you find someone you want to follow, take a few min to really study their boards and follow selectively. When you "follow all" you might find your page getting cluttered with stuff you didn't really care about.
- Set a time limit for yourself. Like many social media, Pinterest is awesome but can turn in to quite the time suck. There is a big rabbit hole ready to swallow you up, so be thoughtful about the time you spend there. Pick a time each day to check it out and give yourself 15 minutes or so and then close that tab. Sharing and being inspired is fun ... until you look up and realize it's two in the morning. (not that I'd know anything about that)

Do you use Pinterest to organize projects and inspiration? What have you found works best for you? Share your tips and favorite boards to follow in the comments!

May Birthday Giveaway: The Butcher and the Vegetarian

[1]

About this: My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I'm giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I'm thrilled to have a copy of Tara Austen Weaver's [2] book The Butcher and the Vegetarian [3] to give away. I read this book when it first came out and I'm running late as I type this so I hope you don't mind if I quote myself [4]:

Tara takes us through the time in her life when she, raised a vegetarian, is advised to take up eating meat to help solve some chronic health troubles. The stories of her trying to figure out how to buy and cook meat are both hilarious and filled with a thoughtful exploration of how to balance the personal and environmental ethics of eating meat. She gets very close to the subject, visiting ranches and farms that are gentle to both the land and the animals, going through some of Michael Pollen?s arguments and spending a day at Meathenge. She finds some very good food and people. Tara doesn?t take any more virtuous than thou stances, and approaches each question looking fairly at all sides. That makes it sound boring, I admit, but I assure you it?s not, the book takes a journey that moves along briskly. I love it when I find an author whose words ring very clear in my head, and Tara is one of those.

If you'd like grab this book please leave a comment with this post. And if you'd like answer this question: Have you ever made a big change in how you eat? I'll go first: In the past few years I've been eating what would be considered healthy and I discovered that it's far more delicious than processed food, something I admit I would not have believed before I made the switch. Ok, you've got until 10 a.m. PST Saturday, May 7th to enter, the fine print [5] applies, good luck! Closed! Thank you for entering!

May Birthday Giveaways!

Hi, hello, hi there. This May marks the tenth year of Not Martha, ten years! A whole decade! To celebrate I'm holding giveaways each weekday in May filled with stuff I love from people I know. It's gonna be fun.

Looking back at the archives I see the first post was on May 22nd, 2001 and I only posted six things that month. The very first post to this site was about a kit that helps you put gifts inside of balloons [1] (sadly, a dead link), the second post was about a long time love of mine the Meathead [2] (miraculously it's still there [3], it's a plastic skull covered with red jello then layers of cold cuts to be served at Halloween and the reason I called my meatloaf hand the Meat Hand [4]), my third post was a list of stuff I liked [5] including retro video games, cookbooks and dishes made of sugar. Posts four [6], five [7] and six [8] are regarding Fluevog shoes that leave hoof prints, gasses that preserve a half empty bottle of wine, and the article in Salon that mentions a magazine that would be published sometime later that year, it was called "Readymade". Taking just the first six posts into consideration I'm gonna go ahead and say this here site hasn't changed much in the past decade. It really doesn't seem like that long.

Each giveaway will take entries for about 24 hours and the first one will be tomorrow morning. Good luck everybody!

Today was way better than yesterday, or so I thought. At lunch I dropped off the last document needed for our tax people to do our taxes, I got all the stuff needed to make dinner, I gathered and bagged the recycling for collection tomorrow, I got everything ready to take photographs of the Easter project I have in mind for this year, I did dishes, I washed and chopped kale, I cleaned out the fridge, I cleared the dining room table of miscellaneous mail and I was feeling triumphant and smart (I was listening to The Tobolowsky Files [1], it makes me feel smart) and nearly I felt like I actually had my stuff together until Scott [2] got home and discovered that all of my keys were still in the lock of the door. Just hanging there, forgotten. In my rush to turn off the alarm when I came home I failed to actually remove my keys from the lock. Way to go, me.

Anyhow, the photograph above is a sneak peek at what I'm doing for Easter. Sort of.

The essential knitted sweater for big little ones

For me down south it is sweater time (or jumper as we call em down here). My mum, a great knitter, emailed me to ask for a whole bunch of kids jumper patterns, she has a few grandkiddies (none of them babies anymore) and is itching to knit something useful now that the cold weather [...]

Kyle [1] sent Scott home with a bottle of the beer which I had the opportunity to watch him make last month [2]. Don't be fooled by the name, I mostly observed! Thank you, Kyle, it was delicious.

How-To: Knit or Crochet a Dodecahedron

dodecahedron-knit1.jpg

This week's Math Monday over on MAKE had an awesome crafty bent.

If you knit, here's a stuffed, dodecahedral thing--I don't know quite what to call it--a toy, a pillow, a mathematical model? The shape is based on twelve 5-sided units like a dodecahedron. But they bump out, so the form is more like a small stellated dodecahedron. This was designed by Norah Gaughan, who provides instructions in this Berroco pattern.

How-To: Library Tote Bag

LibraryTote1.jpg

This summer, the kids and I are hitting the library on a regular basis, so I'm thinking I need to whip up a couple of these cool library tote bags from Mo Bedell of lime gardenias for Sew, Mama, Sew! I particularly love that there's a pocket on the strap specifically for holding the library card.

Public Swings Art Project

Jeff Waldman is raising money to hang swings in public spaces.

What started last year as a conversation about the simplistic pleasures of swings has launched into a multi-city experiment in unexpected joy and cerebral happiness. Via contact info we left on the wooden seats we've received notes from those that used them, talking about the surprising smiles that were left on their faces. They wrote how their days were made better and how the emotions that emerged from stumbling across and using a random swing permeated their afternoon and infected those they came into contact with. The joy felt and the urge to spread it was contagious.

It seems like maybe they could make a few tire swings while they're at it.
